Finnish Fooddities #8: Number one coffee country

Jokapäiväistä Leipää (Daily Bread) has plenty of visitors from foreign countries as well, even though it's mainly written in Finnish. Most of these visits are probably made by Finns abroad, but I want to give something for potential Nonfinns :)

This is the 7th post in series called Finnish Fooddities and it is about Finnish food oddities. Hopefully you'll enjoy it! Check out the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th posts too!

Coffee may have started it's quest around the world from Ethiopia, Africa. But it is Finland, which is no where near Africa, that dominates coffee drinking statistics!

Coffee plant does not succeed in grwoth in Finland, but coffee business is a wise thing to do here! Why is that? Well, these caffeine junkie fellow Finns of mine drink "kaffe" 12 kilos per capita during a year. Just to compare: in Ethiopia the amount is only 1.3 kg and in USA 4.2 kg: Check it out!

I think most of the coffee used in Finland is made in dripolator and consumed black or with milk and/or sugar. Pretty much everything else is considered to be "special". Everything else like espresso.

That brings up interesting situations when these coffee addict countrymen of mine go abroad: simple coffee tends to be something totally different that in Finland. And some lazy talkers may order one latte and get the surprising result of plain milk... when ordering latte here in Finland really gives you cafe latte. Oh well, we do love milk too and liquids what so ever.

We have a special day to celebrate good coffee. The Good Coffee Day is June 6th, which is the Swedish name day of Gustav. Gustav was the first name of the founder of Finnish coffee culture - Gustav Paulig started his family business Paulig in 1876 and nowadays Paulig mainly operates in coffee roasting business.

Did I mention the 12 kilos per capita per year? For example I don't drink coffee and most of the children won't either, so think about how much those brew loving landsmen actually drink it! More than 12 kilos for sure.

Some have tried to limit the coffee drinking in Finland during the years. There has been many years of prohibition and during World Wars coffee was pretty hard to get, so innovative buffs invented replacement products... probably something much more comparable to battery acid or mud I'm sure. Oh the love of Coffee!

To me this is definitely one of Finnish Food Oddities aka Fooddities. The amount alone makes it one. Really, I do love my coffee drinking friends. Perhaps even more when they have had their regular amount of morning brew. But I seriously take this as a Finnish Food Oddity, because hello the 12 kilos per head is gracious plenty!

But what do you think of the drink? Have you had a cup of coffee in Finland or with a Finn?
